Preparing for CQC's Single Assessment Framework: What Good Looks Like Now

The Single Assessment Framework has changed how evidence is gathered and weighed. Here is how forward-thinking providers are reorganising their assurance to match.

The Care Quality Commission's Single Assessment Framework is no longer new, but many providers are still organised for the world before it. Quality statements have replaced key lines of enquiry, evidence categories now shape how judgements are formed, and assessment is increasingly continuous rather than episodic.

The practical consequence is this: evidence that lives in a folder marked 'CQC' is evidence you will struggle to produce when it matters. The providers performing best under the framework are those whose everyday governance naturally generates the proof of quality — board papers, audit cycles, incident learning and feedback loops that exist because they are useful, not because an inspection is due.

Map once, maintain always

We recommend a single evidence map aligned to the quality statements, owned by named leads and refreshed quarterly. When an evidence category is light — people's experience, say, or partner feedback — the map tells you before the regulator does. This is assurance working as it should: a management tool first and an inspection tool second.

Ratings follow culture

In our mock inspection work, the strongest predictor of a good outcome is not documentation but the confidence with which staff at every level can describe how they keep people safe. Invest in that fluency — through walkrounds, supervision and honest conversation — and the evidence largely takes care of itself.
